Chu To Bu Hosts Marti Malloy!

December 9, 2013

marti group

Chu To Bu/Brasa Judo Jiu Jitsu & MMA,  Avon OH, was proud to host an event on November 15 & 16, which showcased the talents of 2012 USA Judo Olympian Marti Malloy.

Marti won the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics and continued her success at The 2013 World Championships in Brazil with a silver medal finish.

The Athletes enjoyed a treat as Marti shared the exact world class techniques that brought her huge success in London and Rio. Her instruction was amazing and knowledge captivated and inspired kids to adults and novice to advanced players.  The students engaged in a guided practice session as well as showing their newly acquired skills to the group.

Marti Malloy did a question and answer session with the athletes.  She shared stories of how she began in the sport of judo to how it felt to compete in the Olympics!  Marti took pictures, signed autographs and even let the kids wear her Olympic and World medals.

Everyone in attendance had a GREAT experience.

St. Francis Bushido Dojo – Welcome Back!

October 24, 2013

2013-09 Rosebud Dojo

Recently, Konan Board of Examiners Chairman Don Flagg traveled to the furthest reaches of our Yudanshakai, to Sensei David Halmi’s  St, Francis Bushido Dojo, now relocated to Rosebud SD

Mr. Flagg  went there to visit and learn more about their club.  Here is his report:

A great bunch of guys.

Sensei Halmi is currently trying to raise monies ($10,000.00) to build a dedicated dojo on his family’s land (Little Thunder family).  He’ll be sending me some drawings and proposals in the near future.

I look forward to visiting them again. Truly.  But since it’s nearly 1000 miles from my house to his, it won’t be soon.  They’re having a blizzard today!

Any other questions, please feel free to ask.  Sensei Halmi and I are of the same generation and really had a great time together.

Look for more news on Sensei Halmi’s new dojo soon. Click here to send your messages of support and encouragement.

IMPORTANT – Michigan Concussion Law Update – Mandatory Compliance

September 30, 2013

Sports Concussion Graphicd

All:

Online trainingAs of this writing 38 states have passed a head injury law (focusing on concussion for youth) which includes judo and judo class activities.  In response to this action we have taken the following position that was passed pending legal review (which took place) at then last Board of Directors Meeting.

We have finalized the Konan Policy and Procedure in regards to head injuries in close consultation with the Konan and JAM attorney and the USJF attorney.  This policy and procedure is based on the Michigan Law.  For those of you not in Michigan we suggest you speak to your attorneys to ensure our policy and procedures are aligned with your state laws regarding head injuries and concussions.

ALL HEAD INSTRUCTORS AND TOURNAMENT OFFICIALS MUST TAKE THE CDC CONCUSSION COURSE (Click hereAND SEND YOUR CERTIFICATION TO ME ASAPTHE LAW IS IN EFFECT

Click here to visit the full  CDC concussion website.

A certificate of completion will be awarded at the end of the approximately 1/2 hour course and a copy is to be sent to the Executive Director (Neil Simon is executive director for both organizations) by e-mail (click here).  The course should be completed ASAP.

For those out of Michigan it would be very helpful to let us know the modifications to the policy and procedure your legal advisor recommend so we can have it for the record.

I have attached for your use the following:

Judo Concussion Policies For the State of Michigan Members
Parent and athlete info sheet compliance statement
    Medical_Clearance_to_Return_to_Play_Form_414367_7

Compliance is mandatory!

If you have any questions about the mandatory compliance please contact Jim Murray, Konan President, or Neil Simon, JAM President and Executive Director for Konan and JAM.

This policy and procedure will be in force  at the GLO!!!

Thanks for all your help and participation.

USJF B.C. Dage Grant Deadline – July 6 – Apply Now

July 3, 2013

New USJF LogoThe B.C. Dage Corporation Athlete Travel Grant has been established by a generous donation to USJF to support travel for competition or training for up-and-coming USJF athletes. The deadline for the the quarterly grants is July 6, 2013.

There is also a separate application process for a Yudanshakai to request travel funds to bring elite USJF competitors to conduct clinics. The Yudanshakai must provide lodging, meals, and a stipend to the athlete conducting the clinic. The aim is to jointly benefit the Yudanshakai and help the athlete support her or his training through teaching. The grant enables Yudanshakai to benefit from the opportunity to work with competitors from other regions of the country. These competitors must meet the same criteria as those for athletes seeking travel funding for competition.

If you are a USJF competitor seeking funding for events (training or competition) between July 7, 2013 and October 6, 2013 . Click here for more information and to apply.

Meet Joshua Edery: The toughest man – or, rather, mensch – in Norfolk.

Three times a week for the past three years, Edery and a half-dozen other students of the Yeshivas Aish Kodesh academy have practiced throwing, wrestling and choking one another as part of one of the school’s more unusual after-school activities: intramural judo.

The academy is a private school for Orthodox Jewish boys. In addition to algebra, government and literature, students study the Talmud, religious ethics and other tenets of their faith – sometimes in the original Hebrew, Aramaic or medieval text. It’s the sort of place young men in yarmulkes and tallit katans – ponchos with specially knotted fringes – debate obscure religious laws involving who’s at fault when a fire kills a goat.

Club members stress that people shouldn’t be surprised that they want to learn judo. There’s nothing in the Talmud that says they can’t defend themselves, they said.

“Obviously, religion is a big part of our lives, but at the end of the day, we are normal kids,” said Edery, an 18-year-old blue belt who won the school’s first “Tough Mensch” tournament in December and hopes to bring home the title again Sunday. “We like to get out and have fun like anyone else.”
