Date: Aug. 9-10, 2014

Where: Southside Dojo, 8534 Portage Rd.  Portage, Mi. 49002

Registration at the door starts Saturday, August 9, 2014 at 12:30pm. Please be on the mat by 1:30pm.

If you will be joining us for the Sunday Clinic only please register by 8:30am on Sunday as the on mat session starts at 9am.

Clinicians: Francis Glaze, Louise Ullman and others TBA

Saturday or Sunday only session:  Pre register $25.00, on site $30.00

Saturday and Sunday:   Pre Register $40.00, on site $50.00

Campers bring your sleeping bag, towel, and any personal item you will want for the stay. Included for the campers will be cookout Saturday night, breakfast and a snack lunch Sunday.

Konan 2014 Fall Promotional Clinic, Maumee OH – August 24

  • Mr. Don Flagg, Rokudan, Chair Konan Board of Examiners USJF A Kata Instructor and USJI Kata Judge.
  • Mrs. Frances Glaze, Rokudan, Vise Chair of the Board of Examiners, USJF A Kata Instructor and USJI Kata Judge.
  • Also will be other members of the Konan Promotion Committee.

Candidates will review for their Kata and Go Kyo no Waza. We strongly suggest you prepare for the promotion test at the promotional clinic. Those that want to be certified in a Kata must fill out application form plus a $20.00 testing fee that goes to USJF. You must notify Mr. Flagg that you are planning to test for Kata certification prior to the beginning of the clinic. Only USJF members may be evaluated for promotion and certification.

Candidates must submit their Form 20 to Mr. Tom Sheehan,  Promotion Committee Chair and to Mr. Don Flagg Chair Konan Board of Examiners. for the promotional exam no later than August 16, 2014.  Click here to create an e-mail to attach your completed form to and to send to Mr. Sheehan and Mr. Flagg. Candidates must obtain a Form 20 (Click here for Form 20). A Background Check must be submitted to National Office by August 16, 2014 for those who are going to be a candidate unless you have one deemed current. They are valid for four years.  Click here to obtain  a Background Check Form. The Registration Form and Waiver for the Clinic will be available at the Clinic.

ELIGIBILITY: All participants must present a valid U.S.J.I., U.S.J.F. or U.S.J.A card at the workshop site. If
you cannot produce a card, in order to participate, you will need to purchase a membership on site. Foreign
contestants must have the proper ID from their home country.

Konan / JAM Novice Referee Workshops – Part 2

This beginner, novice, and local referee workshop is the second in a series of three for beginning referees and coaches. The intent of this series is to develop an understanding of the judo rules and to develop future referees.

The second session will focus on mat procedures, control of the match, referee movements, voice, dress code and judge/referee behavior. At the third session we will have videos, mock contests, and a written assessment.

Please wear a judo-gi for these workshops.

So please attend! Everyone should review the rules before coming to the workshop. If you do not have a copy of the rules, go to the and than go to referee’s and downloads the rules.

This workshop is open to all judoka with no minimum age. For referee’s certification, the minimum age is fourteen for local referee.

Konan’s Nick Joseph Wins Gold at JO’s in Irving

After suffering through a freshman year in which he sustained an Achilles tendon injury and contracted mononucleosis, a healthy Nicholas Joseph rebounded to win a national title in his favorite sport. A wrestling and judo performer, Joseph, a rising junior at Novi Detroit Catholic Central, captured gold at the USA Judo Junior Olympic National Championships in Irving, Texas, last weekend. Competing in the Juvenile B Division for 15- to 17-year-olds, Joseph won the 66-kilogram division, going 4-0.
