Walter Lamb, a fixture on the Michigan Judo scene for over 40 years, has passed away. Click here for his obituary.
From Gary Wood, Troy Judo Club:
I just found out on Facebook that Walter Lamb passed yesterday from an apparent heart attack.
Walter was a big influence in my early development in Judo. I met him at Providence Hospital when we both worked there and I was a new green belt. Later I spent many hours working out in his MMA club – Metro Fight Club in Ann Arbor. I’ve always enjoyed Walter’s positive attitude and encouragement. I’m proud to have called him friend. He will be greatly missed.
Walter started Judo at age 6 along with his older brother Bill. Their father was with the FBI and they studied in clubs across the country. Walter frequently fought competitors much larger than he was and went on to become a Big Ten Champ at Michigan State. He was also a member of the Detroit Judo Club in its prime.
Most importantly Walter was a positive influence for countless people, particularly a number of young men that were on the wrong path. I’ve seen the final result and can appreciate how much of an impact he’s made with people across the spectrum. His coaching and encouragement helped me significantly during my competitive years.

If I’m not mistaken, I think Walter’s third match in that competition video was Don Flag.
