SafeSport seeks to create a healthy, supportive environment for all participants. Through education, resources, and training, we help members of the sport community recognize, reduce, and respond to misconduct in sport.

The SafeSport program is the culmination of sustained work on the part of a number of passionate individuals. In 2010, the USOC convened the Working Group for Safe Training Environments and charged it with the task of developing a set of recommendations concerning misconduct in sport. The diverse group, which included individuals from the Olympic Family as well as external experts, focused on four primary objectives:

▪ Addressing sexual and physical misconduct in sport

▪ Reviewing the guidelines across sports and other related organizations for responding to these issues

▪ Assessing the needs of athletes, coaches, staff, National Governing Bodies (NGBs), clubs and other sport organizations

▪ Developing a set of recommendations to promote athlete well-being

Based on the group’s report, the USOC founded the SafeSport program to address misconduct in sport by providing information, training, and resources.

October 26, 2013

2013 Malloy Group web

From Saito-sensei:

The Malloy clinic last Saturday was huge success – one of best attended clinics ever hosted by MJDA, Konan and JAM.

A total of 39  students attended plus Saito, Wee and many parents who took video, so the dojo was packed. Special thanks to our four friends from St. Louis who drive 9 hours, overnight, to attend.

Ms.  Malloy demonstrated that she is an excellent instructor – well-organized and with very solid technique.

2013 Malloy Sankaku turnover - webIn the first of two sessions she taught a number of ne-waza techniques:-

  1. Turn-over from bottom – 3 variations
  2. Ne-waza attack to pin from the back when opponent’s throw fails
  3. Juji gatame from Sankaku fake.

In the second session, she demonstrated and taught tachi-waza techniques:

  1. Ippon seoinage – from very high standing position
  2. Left kouchi from right-side grip after with fake sode tsurikomi goshi
  3. Sumi-gaeshi (hikikomi grip) using kouchi-gari fake to sutemi-waza.

Between clinics and after the second session, many people attendees posed for pictures with Ms. Malloy and her Olympic and World Championship medals.  The younger students had many questions – It was good to see these young students excited about this Judo Olympian.

Ms. Malloy reported that she enjoyed her visit to Konan immensely and looks forward to returning to Konan in November with a two-day clinic at Chu To Bu West, Avon OH. Click here for details.

Thanks to all the attendees and special thanks to MJDA, Konan and JAM for financial support of this clinic. To lean more about MJDA or to become a supporter, click here.

2013 President’s Cup – Irving TX – November 24

October 26, 2013

Last year the tournament increased four times the number of competitors compared with the Judo Presidents’ Cup from 2011.

A total of 263 competitors registered for the two-day tournament in Irvine, CA, last year. This is an event you can’t miss!

The President’s Cup is a Senior “C” level point event. It is also a Junior Point event, thus creating TWO point opportunities for some Juniors.

Senior Competition:

Athletes born 1998 or earlier are eligible to enter and earn points in the Senior competition. That includes all Senior age athletes, plus IJF Jr and Juvenile B athletes. Athletes who meet these age parameters, enter and place in the Senior Shiai portion will earn 5 Senior points for 1st, 3 for 2nd, 2 for 3rd and 1 for 5th place.

Any of the athletes who place in the Senior Shiai portion and who were born in 1993-1998, will ALSO earn Junior points at a 3 x multiplier. Juniors who place in the Senior Shiai earn 15, 9, 6 or 3 Junior points based on 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 5th place finishes. This means that if a 16 year old wins the Senior Women’s 57kg division, she will receive 5 Senior points AND she will receive 15 Junior points on her age-appropriate Junior roster.

Junior  Competition:

The Junior divisions of the President’s Cup are also pointable. These points can be earned by any Junior who places 1st 2nd or 3rd in any of the regular Junior divisions. Points will be awarded at the rate of 2 points for 1st, 1 for 2nd and 0.5 for 3rd place.

St. Francis Bushido Dojo – Welcome Back!

October 24, 2013

2013-09 Rosebud Dojo

Recently, Konan Board of Examiners Chairman Don Flagg traveled to the furthest reaches of our Yudanshakai, to Sensei David Halmi’s  St, Francis Bushido Dojo, now relocated to Rosebud SD

Mr. Flagg  went there to visit and learn more about their club.  Here is his report:

A great bunch of guys.

Sensei Halmi is currently trying to raise monies ($10,000.00) to build a dedicated dojo on his family’s land (Little Thunder family).  He’ll be sending me some drawings and proposals in the near future.

I look forward to visiting them again. Truly.  But since it’s nearly 1000 miles from my house to his, it won’t be soon.  They’re having a blizzard today!

Any other questions, please feel free to ask.  Sensei Halmi and I are of the same generation and really had a great time together.

Look for more news on Sensei Halmi’s new dojo soon. Click here to send your messages of support and encouragement.
