USA Judo Takes Five Medals At Pan American Open

From USA-Judo – USA Judo took a silver and four bronze medals yesterday at the Pan American Open in Montevideo, Uruguay, in one of the first big ventures by the U.S. team in the new Olympic quadrennium.

Janine Nakao, 63 kg (Team FORCE, Wakefield, Mass.) went 3-1 for the day to take the silver. Taking bronze alongside Nakao in that division were Hannah Martin (Jason Morris Judo, Burnt Hills, NY), who defeated Katherine Campos of Brazil in repechage for a spot on the podium, and Alisha Galles (Mojica Judo Club, Lancaster, CA), who bested Columbia’s Diana Velasco in repechage to join her teammates.

Hana Carmichael, 57 kg. (Team FORCE, Wakefield, Mass.), defeated Great Britain’s Connie Ramsay in repechage, throwing her twice with sode for two yukos to win, going 3-1 for the day to take bronze. Angelica Delgado, 52 kg. (Ki-Itsu-Sai National Training Center, Coral Springs, FL), defeated Argentina’s Fiorella Garnica in repechage to take bronze.

For a number of the athletes on this large U.S. team, this is their first time back at a major tournament since London, where Team USA made history with Harrison taking the nation’s first gold medal in the sport.
