Kayla Inspires!

January 31, 2013

Kayla-MageeIn early December, Sensei Paul Jordan of Chu To Bu West Judo, JuJitsu and MMA of Avon Ohio hosted a youth and adult clinic led by Olympic Gold Medalist Kayla Harrison.  Here is a report by one young participant.

My sister and I recently had the opportunity to attend the Kayla Harrison clinic in Avon Ohio.

As I’m sure everyone knows she is the first women for the USA to win a gold medal in Judo. Her Judo is fantastic.

We did several drills on grip fighting, throws and newaza. The grip fighting was fun and something new for me as our workouts are more traditional and we work on the basics.  I now try to “KILL THE SLEEVE” before I get my lapel grip.

My little sister loved the newaza “split the leg guard pass” and now uses it all the time.

The clinic was fun and well worth the drive from Michigan. We got a chance to hold a real gold medal, and Kayla talked about what it was like winning and losing and traveling the world.  (The losing part is what I struggle with.)

As a girl in Judo, I sometimes get discouraged, as I mostly workout with guys who are bigger and stronger than me. It’s encouraging to meet Kayla and to know that I’m not the only girl that has felt this way.

If any of you girls out there get a chance to go to one of here clinics do it. She’ll work you hard and you’ll have fun doing it.

Open Letter to all Judo Supporters

From:   Noboru Saito

Happy New Year.

I am writing to ask your help to meet one of the biggest challenges the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) has put before the USA Judo Board of Directors.

This is a big year for USA Judo: USA Judo will be hosting a number of major international championships, including the World Cadet Championship (U 18 years old) this summer.  These events offer American judo competitors the opportunity for elite competition close to home and also raise the profile of American Judo here in the USA and internationally.

However, USA Judo needs funding to host these events.

This year, for the first time ever, USOC will give USA Judo a matching grant up to $35,000 towards this year’s USA Judo Board of Directors fund raising effort. Not only that, USOC will release the matching funds as the USA Judo Board of Directors raises money.  In other words, as soon as we, as USA Judo Directors, raise $5000, USOC will release the matching $5000 to USA Judo.

I have already secured some funding, but we have a long way to go yet. I would appreciate if you consider giving your hard earn money to USA Judo for this purpose.

Any amount will help. I have attached the contribution form to this letter, or you may contribute online.

Again, thank you very much for your consideration of this program.

Sincerely yours,

Noboru Saito
USA Judo Board of Director

Additional 2012 Sanix Report from Dr. Larry Tsutsui, Kenji Litke, Takashi Tsutsi

The Global Arena

Returning to the Global Arena for the 2012 Sanix International Junior High School tournament in December 2012 was a time to see old friends, familiar faces and make new friends.  For the coaches, Martha and Alan, it was their second visit. For Martha her first visit was 8 years ago as a competitor and for Alan five years ago as a parent. For Rob, his first visit, but he heard of the Global Arena through his sons, Bryce and Chase, who were on past teams. For myself, a third visit to this wondrous place. The club house lobby is magical with a big Christmas Tree tables, couches and chairs. A great place to visit and rest. The guest rooms were comfortable and warm. The teams’s rooms spacious with twelve bunk beds in each room for our teams of five boys and three girls.

Please click here to read the full 2nd report – you will get a good idea of the Sanix experience and what it means to the young athletes and their coaches. Click here to read the first report.

Thanks again to Imamura-sensei, Saito-sensei and our judo friends in Fukuoka who arrange for this great annual event, with funding help from USJF, Konan Judo and MJDA.

2012 Sanix report From Head Coach Dr. Oishi & Team

January 16, 2013

Please click on the following links for the full reports from Dr. Oishi and members of the 2012 Sanix team.

All the participants did a very a good job representing American judo and the USJF in particular.  This program is partially funded by the USJF Development Committee, with the grant administered by Konan Yudanshakai, but the large majority of the cost is self funded by the participants.

The  Sanix Tournament offers promising Junior High School USJF judoka the opportunity to travel to Japan and get “hands on” experience at a high level of intensity and technical quality that cannot be found here in the US.  It includes competition as well as coaching from elite Japanese coaches, including Olympic medalists. In the past the experience has proven to be both educational and inspirational, with Sanix “graduates” consistently going on to medal in national competition and generally show great improvement in judo skill and attitude.

In the past, young people from a number of  Yudanshakai have participated. This year the qualified youth were from the West Coast.

Special thanks to Imamura-sensei of Fresno Judo and Saito-sensei of Saito Dojo, whose personal relations with the Sanix organizers in Fukuoka Prefecture make this annual event possible. Thanks as well to Dr. Oishi and the adult support staff, and the many financial contributors, without whose assistance the travel would not be possible.
