LONDON – Marti Malloy came up short Monday in her bid to become the first U.S. man or woman to win a gold medal in Olympic judo. But she earned a bronze with a match-ending throw, and bronze is nearly as rare for U.S. women in judo.

Marti Malloy of the United States celebrates after winning the women’s 57 kg judo bronze medal.
Malloy, 26, won the bronze by ippon (judo’s version of a walk-off homer) when she threw Giulia Quintavalle of Italy with 2:34 elapsed in their five-minute match for one of two bronze medals awarded in the 126-pound weight class.
