2012 Konan Annual Meeting Minutes v1 (01125111)

As a followup, I am contemplating having a short conference call (60 minute) with interested dojo senseis  and other Konan members in mid-May (on a Sunday night) to discuss how best to “grow” judo in Konan. As we discussed, our collective membership numbers are hovering in place over the past several years rather than growing at a nice pace. Konan/JAM Masters Judoka Place at USA-Judo Senior Nationals

April 28, 2012

Last week-end’s USA-Judo Senior Nationals in Irving TX were well attended with almost twice as many competitors as last year’s event.

Congratulations to Masters  competitors Rick Hysell,  AllianceAZO Judo,  Silver Medal M3 -90 kg., and Patrick Anderson, MSU Judo Club, Bronze Medal, M5 -100 kg.

Both these competitors enjoyed the competition immensely. Both are active Masters competitors at our local tournaments events – If you are an “older” judoka, next time you see them ask them about competing at Senior national and consider training to participate in next year’s event.

“It is a great experience to compete with very experienced athletes from across the country, and it is highly motivating to think of who you might face at next year’s tournament when you train in Michigan all year long,” said Anderson, winner of the Masters Heavyweight division at the 2012 Michigan Open. “Plus, I have a few tricks to bring back to my friends at the MSU Judo Club.”

In the meantime, here is a clip featuring Mr. Hawn:

Authority on Kata Didnt Always Love the Forms

(from USA Judo) Eiko Saito Shepherd understands completely — there was a time when she didn‟t want to do kata either. In fact, she disliked the prospect of studying kata so much that when she was told at the Kodokan that she would be required to demonstrate the forms to receive a black belt, she nearly declined. “I told the Kodokan that if I have to practice kata, I do not want to take the test!” she recalled. “All I wanted to do was randori and shiai!”

But at the Kodokan, there was no room for leniency, and Shepherd soon agreed. Not only did she train in kata and pass the test for Shodan, she went on to become an
leading authority on kata. She is now a 7 th dan, the vice-chairman of USA Judos  committee on kata and the chairman of the US Judo Federations kata committee.

She frequently conducts clinics on kata and will be leading one in conjunction with the upcoming Senior National Championships in Irving, TX, next Friday, April 20. For more on that, go to KATA CLINIC. The seminar will include testing for certification as a national-level kata judge.
