Holiday Workouts at Oakland University Judo Club

December 19, 2011

I know that a lot of the YMCA and school programs are shut down for rest of December and January. If you want to get a couple workouts in for MSU tournament prep, or just to stay in shape, OU Judo will be open for workouts this week (week of December 19) on Monday and Wed. from 7:30 – 9:15 PM at the Oakland Training Center (Crooks and Hamlin in Rochester Hills, click here for more information).

FYI, we will also workout on Jan. 2 (if I get enough commitments and judo is in your New Years Resolution!) and on Jan. 4 as well.

Everyone needs to sign a waiver (attached). Blackbelts are free and other USJF/USJA/USA-Judo registered judokas can workout with either a Konan mat pass, or pay $5 mat fee for each workout (1/2 the usual mat fee).

Feel free to call me with any questions.

Happy Holidays if I don’t see you.

Kayla Harrison Takes Gold At Grand Prix in China

December 18, 2011

Team USA’s Kayla Harrison beat the 2008 Olympic Champion from China to take the Gold Medal at the Grand Prix Qingdao today.

“This is a huge win for Kayla,” said Jimmy Pedro, Jr., her coach who was back in the states. “One of the purposes for this trip was for Kayla to get a chance to compete against the Chinese girl because she has never fought her before. Getting a chance to fight her in the final in China and beating her by ippon couldn’t have worked out better!” he said. Pedro is the head coach of the US Olympic Judo Team.

Pedro’s dad, Jim Pedro Sr., coached Harrison overseas first to take silver in Tokyo at a Grand Slam just a week ago and then in China today. “We had planned on using these tournaments for training,” said Pedro, Sr. “The most important thing is the Olympics. So in Tokyo we didn’t know what to expect because we didn’t peak for that tournament. In Tokyo, beating the eighth seed from Slovenia and then beating the number four woman in the world, the Brazilian, was key.”

USA Judo Approves First Draft of Strategic Plan

December 17, 2011

From Jose Humberto Rodriguez, CEO of USA Judo

December 11, 2011 – After nearly two years of work, USA Judo’s Board of Directors this weekend approved the first draft of the organization’s Strategic Plan.

A sub-committee of the Board of Directors, made up of President Lance Nading, Gail Stolzenberg, Noboru Saito, Jim Webb and Jason Rivera with the guidance of Rachel Isaacs of the USOC, and Neil Simon (USJF President) as a paid consultant, put the finishing touches on this organic and living document that will serve as the vision for USA Judo for decades to come.

The document outlines several key guiding principles for the organization and spells out clearly the Vision, Mission and

Goals of USA Judo as we move into 2012 and beyond. It also defines the objectives that the organization must achieve in order to meet its vision of the future and successfully attain its goals.

Please Support the Furukowa Endowment Fund

December 12, 2011

I am writing you today on behalf of the Konan Judo Association. As you may know, Konan is a not for profit 501C3 organization, that is directly responsible for much of the judo activity in the Midwest. Our scope of influence stretches from Pennsylvania to Colorado, and from Upper Michigan through Ohio. Working closely with the various national organizations, Konan’s mission is to assist our member clubs, instructors, judokas, and the community to enjoy their judo experience.

Mr. Louie Furukawa passed away in 2005. He was an active supporter of judo in the Midwest for over 50 years. He represented the perfect example of a dedicated and selfless sensei devoted to making his students learn the fundamentals of judo while having fun. In memory of Mr. Furukawa we established the Konan Louie Furukawa Endowment Fund dedicated to helping grow and nurture judo at all levels.
