Konan and JAM Call for Volunteers – USA Judo Scholastics

February 22, 2011

A message from Steve DeRaedt, Konan President, and Dave Wertheimer, JAM President:

“We” have volunteered to staff a mat at the Scholastics in Grand Rapids on April 2/3.

April 1 is a setup day and April 3 is takedown day.

Click here for more information about this event.

We are soliciting your support for three main tasks:

  1. Setup on April 1: Starts in early AM
  2. April 2/3: Mat Scoring and Adm. Support
  3. Take-down on April 3 (after tournament concludes)

FYI, We will have funding to help with gas and hotel (we will need to consolidate several in a room) and we will determine details once we have staffing commitments.  You will get to watch some high quality judo, learn about scoring and refereeing first hand and get fed and get to meet and work a couple days with a really cool mat supervisor.

Can you send us your interest and commitment for which task (1/2/3) by return email before March 10 so we can assess our situation?

Since we did this last year for the President’s Cup, we are hoping to have some “trained returnee volunteers” to make this proceed effectively.  We need to have enough folks to provide relief as well.

Thanks in advance and call/email with any questions.

February 20, 2011 – U.S. Olympian Travis Stevens battled his way to gold at the super hot Dusseldorf Grand Prix today, defeating the 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist, Ole Bischof, on the climb.

Stevens came out fast and fierce, slamming his first opponent, Thomas Davis of Britain, in just 47 seconds with a stunning uchimata, one of the sport’s most beautiful throws, for ippon.

“He just planted him,” said Pedro Sr., in charge of the elite competition teams at Pedro’s Judo Center in Wakefield, Mass., home of Team FORCE where Stevens trains under Pedro Sr.’s son, two-time Olympic Bronze Medalist Jimmy Pedro.

Stevens may have added to history with his gold win, Pedro Sr. believes, because he is probably only the second American to win a gold at this A-Level tourney. Jimmy Pedro was the first, Pedro Sr. said.

What to put in a Dojo Medical Kit

February 20, 2011

From USA-Judo (By Falcon Physical Therapy’s Director of Sports Medicine, Randy Bales, ATC):

In a perfect world, nothing bad would ever happen. Since we don’t live in a perfect world, there is a need for preparedness. For this reason, first aid kits are readily available most anywhere we go. They can be found in most public buildings, usually on any public mode of transportation, in most of our work places, in many homes and are even available for your car. They are even available in many different sizes and contain a variety of materials to fit most any need.

The dojo should be no exception. Being a contact sport, as we all know, the possibility for injury in judo is always present. These injuries can range from a simple bruise or cut, dislocation/fracture or even worse. Thus it is necessary to be prepared for whatever may happen. A relatively small medical kit can be very useful in just such a setting.

The contents of a medical kit should be general enough to meet a variety of needs, yet fairly specific to the sport itself. For example: Click here for full article.
