USA Judo Announces 2011 D and E Level Point Tournaments

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – USA Judo athletes will be able to earn D and E level points toward rankings on the USA Judo Senior Elite National Roster at 10 events in 2011.

Three events have been upgraded from E to D-Level status in 2011 with the Liberty Bell Classic (Bryn Athyn, Pa. / March 27), Dallas Invitational (Grapevine, Texas / TBD) and San Jose Buddhist Sensei Memorial Tournament (San Jose, Calif. / Feb. 20) each receiving D-Level status.

2011 Midwestern Championships – March 19, 2011

The 2011 Midwestern Championships has changed its location and will be held at the Crowne Plaza in Rosemont, Ill. on March 19, just minutes from the O’Hare Airport.

Golf Raffle (only 25 tickets will be sold at $10 each): Golf the Dream, or Nightmare Courses in West Branch, MI next year. Raffle Drawing will held on Monday, May 30 or as soon as 25 tickets are sold.

Passes good for 4 golfers and 18 holes at either course with cart and caddie (Pete Catlos or his look-a-like brother, Little Stevie Dee) included.

To enter, check for $10 (made out toKonan) to Steven DeRaedt at 5747 Kirkridge Trail, Rochester Hills, MI 48306.

Proceeds will go to the Furakawa Endowment Fund and to support 2011 Sanix Youth team.

We are aiming to use our website more heavily for member communications.  Please help us in this effort by subscribing to the website by using the link on the upper right of the web page.

Subscription will get you a notification every time an item is posted on the site, along with a summary of the item. Tournament and clinic notices, results, general judo news and judo videos are all posted.

Sensei’s please encourage your  students to subscribe.  Any club information you want distributed can be sent to the Konan Webmaster and it will get psoted on the site. E-mail subscription will bring that news right to your members’ in-box.

USJF – Konan Special SANIX Coaching Clinic February 19 and 20

This Clinic is for teachers, coaches and player.  We have brought in a sensei from the SANIX Tournament in Japan. He is one of their most productive Jr. High and High School coaches.  He will share with us his thoughts, methods, and techniques for teaching this level judoka.

Konan is in the process of seeking interested candidates to run for membership on its Executive Committee.  The Executive Committee’s positions, and their current members, are set forth below:

Konan elections will be held at the end of February, 2011, and the deadline for submission of nominations is February 7, 2011.

The elected members will serve for a one year term, but must be willing to serve for an additional year if asked.   For your reference, the structure and purpose of the Executive Committee are described in the Konan By-Laws, which are available on the Konan website.

Godau Judo at the Kroc Center, Grand Rapids

Hi All,

We have been busy establishing a new judo program at the Kroc Center.

We will be meeting Monday and Wednesday from 6:30 to 8PM.

Our first night will be Wednesday, February 2, 2011,  6:30-8PM

Our introductory price could not be better FREE for member of the Kroc Center.  Non-member will have to pay a $5.00 facility fee.  For the price of the facility fee you can participate in the judo class and use the rest of the facility as well! (Weights, Pool, Exercise Equipment, …)

This introductory rate will run from February 2 – March 9:

March 14, 2011 starts our regular program.

USA Judo Athletes to Receive More than $100,000 in Stipends

_mg_9012USA Judo is pleased to announce that five athletes will receive monthly direct athlete support stipends in 2011 and even more will be eligible for funding throughout the year.

  • Reigning World Champion Kayla Harrison (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo National Team FORCE) will receive $700 per month.
  • Five-time World Cup medalists Travis Stevens and Nick Delpopolo, both of the NYAC and USA Judo National Team FORCE programs in Wakefield, Mass., will each receive $600 per month.
  • Six-time World Cup medalist Michael Eldred (Fruitland, Idaho / Western Idaho Judo Institute) and four-time World Cup medalist Marti Malloy (San Jose, Calif. / USA Judo National Training Site at San Jose State University) will each receive $500 per month.
