Meijer State Games of Michigan
June 24-26, 2011
The second annual State Games of Michigan will offer 10 new sports when it returns June 24-26, 2011, but don’t look for baseball to be among them.
That’s not to say the local baseball community isn’t willing to embrace the games and pitch in, though.
West Michigan Sports Commission officials announced Tuesday during a news conference at Fifth Third Ballpark that the West Michigan Whitecaps will host the opening ceremonies the evening of June 24.
Next year’s games will consist of 25 sports, and roughly 5,000 athletes are expected to compete. Those athletes will have the opportunity to soak in the festivities and parade through Fifth Third Ballpark in front of family, friends and fans before heading off to their respective venues across the Grand Rapids area to compete.
Nearly 3,500 athletes participated in the inaugural games, and that number is expected to grow with the additional sports.
New to the games next year will be archery, cricket, golf, youth ice hockey, judo, lacrosse, pickleball, skateboarding, swimming and wrestling
