USA Judo to Host Four Major Masters Events in the USA in 2010

February 10, 2010

The first of these four major competitions will be the 2010 Senior Nationals to be held in beautiful  Myrtle Beach on  May 1 and 2.  Masters (Veterans) competition will be on Saturday May 2nd.  Late Registration will take place on Friday April 30th .  Entry packets are now available at www.usjudo.org and you can save by registering early.

The second tournament for Masters (Veterans) will be the National Presidents Cup in Grand Rapids, Michigan at the DeVos Place on June 26 & 27.  The beautiful Amway Grand Hotel will serve as the headquarter hotel. Registration packets and information will be out soon, but save the date now.

There are two international events this year that will be a part of the four major Master (Veterans) events USA Judo will be offering.  The famous Doral Golf Resort & Spa  in Miami will play host to the IJF World Cup and 2010 US Open August 26-29th.  On Sunday,  August 29 USA Judo will be offering  Masters (Veterans)  divisions during the US Open. This will be a great opportunity for Masters (Veterans) competitors to come out and watch some of the World’s best Judokas compete at the World Cup, enjoy a day of golf on one of the world’s best golf course, and then compete themselves on Sunday.

And if that is not enough….

On Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 4 & 5 following the event in Miami, USA Judo will host the Pan American Masters Championships at Disney’s Wide World of Sports.  The masters (Veterans) competition will be held in conjunction with the Pan Am Junior and Visually Impaired divisions. This is Labor Day weekend.

It is USA Judo hope that by offering these two international events back to back within a few hours  driving distance of one another, our Master (Veteran) athletes in the USA will be able to plan a nice vacation time where they can also share some family experience at Doral and Disney this summer.

So, mark your calendar, and get ready for an unsurpassed 2010 Masters Competition schedule!

Sanix 2009 Tournament Report

February 6, 2010

The Sanix Tournament is an annual invitational  judo tournament for 13 and 14 year-olds, held in Japan  at Christmas time.  Through a combination of self-funding and assistance from Sanix Corporation, USJF,  Konan Judo Association and Michigan Judo Development, this event is an extraordinary opportunity for qualified judo students.

Every year a USJF team with Konan players participates.  In 2009, Konan was represented by Michael Assels, Ryan Hisaki, Donald Moseman, Summer Truong and Riku Higashi.  This past year’s Sanix event was another success for US team members.  The tournament consisted of 8 teams from 8 countries outside Japan and 69 teams from all over the Japan, mainly the west side.

Our team won the first round 3-2 but lost the second round 5-0 against a much bigger and better team.  Top teams at Sanix are very strong, and skilled – at least nidan level by our US standards.

In addition to the tournament, participants enjoyed 2 days of training camp.  All  Konan team members practiced very hard – many warm ups, Uchi komis and many, many randori sessions.

After the tournament, practice matches were held, as well.  The match-ups were very fair, resulting in a balance of wins and losses for Konan players.  Most importantly, our team represented Konan and USJF well, fighting hard and fair.

All team members behaved well off the mat and were well-liked by the sponsor, Sanix, and by the Japanese kids.  They will write their experience in USJF Magazine, so you can read more when it is published.

Also, you can find photos at http://gallery.me.com/Tita33.  Here is a nice  Thank You and Card from one of the 2009 participants.

This report is taken from a preliminary report by Mr Noboru Saito, who accompanied the team.  Photos thanks to Ms.  Julie Moseman.

Konan Yudanshakai IJF 2010 New Rules Update Clinic

February 5, 2010

IJF logoOn January 30, before the Konan Rank Evaluation Tournament, Mr. Noboru Saito (International Referee) and Mr. Neil Simon (National Referee) conducted a very informative clinic covering the new competition rules for 2010.

These are major rule changes, effectively eliminating many formerly acceptable techniques, with a penalty of hansokumake for violation.  The changes are largely directed at limiting the use of grips below the belt (i.e. leg grabbing), except in very specifically defined situations.   It  is critical for referees, coaches and, most importantly, competitors to understand these new rules –  application requires great judgement, applied very quickly.

The clinic, which  ran from 10:30 am until noon, was funded by a grant from USJF and free of charge to all attendees. It was very well attended, with 51 participants, including competitors, coaches and the following referees: Thomas Sheehan (B), Don Flagg (C), Gerald Wee (C), Mike Mooney (N), Don Cattel, Dan VanHemm, Gary Wood, Jamie Blake, Don Wilson, Derek Battle, Gordeau Watkins, Danielle Clinton. The attendees represented all levels of the Konan judo community and were excited and eager to learn about these major changes to judo competition rules.

Konan New Rules Clinic

The clinic began with an explanation of the reason for the changes – to differentiate Olympic judo from wrestling and other grappling sports.  A detailed PowerPoint  presentation was reviewed, showing many examples of both legal and illegal techniques. This was followed by a review of all 60 examples found on the IJF website, alng with revised interpretations, as reported by Mr. Joon Chi, USJF Referee Development and Certification Committee- Chairperson, after his visit to the the 2010 Korea World Master Championship.

The clinic was very effective as a surprisingly small number of hansokumake penalties were issued under then new rules. Evidently referees, coaches and competitors listen well!

Thanks to Mr. Saito and Mr. Simon for this informative clinic.
